Support Scientist for Mt. Hamilton ObserversThe University of California Observatories/Lick Observatory invites applications for a non-ladder-rank academic position in the UCO/Lick Observatory. Contingent on the availability of funding, the appointment initially will be for two years beginning October 1, 2007, with the possibility of extension. The major area of responsibility will be providing instruction, assistance, and scientific guidance to observers on the use of the observatory’s telescopes and instruments. Other duties may include supporting installation and commissioning of new equipment; carrying out observing programs for observers, as requested; providing support for remote observing; performing on-call trouble-shooting and simple repairs; and conducting observatory tours and night viewing programs, as scheduled by Director. The appointee will work closely with observatory faculty and technical staff, and will be under the general direction of the UCO/Lick Observatory Director. Participation in research programs leading to published results is encouraged. Considerable nighttime work required. Applicant expected to reside in University-subsidized residence on Mt. Hamilton. RANK: Assistant Specialist II—Associate Specialist III SALARY: $40,212—$53,748 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Strong experience in research-level astronomical instrumentation. Candidates must have a working knowledge of observational techniques and astronomical data reduction. Knowledge of high-precision optical alignment and calibration, adaptive optics, electronics, computer programming, and experience with the operation of large telescopes is highly desirable. Candidates must have the ability to work with a diverse population and have excellent communication skills. Candidates should also possess the ability to work independently, as well as in a team.
