How To Prepare a UCO/Lick Observatory Preprint
Work appropriate for preprints includes:
- papers for refereed journals
- papers for publication in conference proceedings
- technical papers, instrument manuals, etc.
There is a standardized LaTeX template for creating the cover page of
a UCO/Lick Observatory or UCSC Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics preprint. This cover may be used for papers by people affiliated with:
- Lick Observatory
- University of California Observatories
- UCSC Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics
- UCO/Lick Laboratories
- Keck Observatory--when negotiated with CalTech
Instructions and sample templates can be found on the University of Victoria server.
The template was created by Greg Wirth wirth@uvastro.phys.uvic.ca,
Duncan Forbes, and Matt Bershady.
A Quick Summary
- Email webeditor@ucolick.org with the title and full list of authors, and
request a Lick preprint number. Alternatively, you may request this number in person at the Publications office.
- Get the
preprint template called pretemplate.pex.
- Edit the template file with assigned
preprint number, title, author list, and journal.
- Latex (e.g. latex filename.tex) and
print the file (e.g. dvips filename.dvi).
- Obtain an work order/recharge form from the Lick Observatory Business Office and have it signed by the PI for the grant to be charged.
- Take the recharge form, the cover page and the preprint itself to the UCSC copy center (Communications building, near UCO/Lick shops.)
- Request that the cover page be copied on the "special Lick Observatory lavender card stock", to maintain consistancy and quality in our reprint series.
Photocopying costs are about 5¢ per sheet and the lavender preprint cover costs about 8¢ per sheet for the blank stock. Preprints can be delivered to your office on campus.
- The mailing of preprints is the authors responsibility. We suggest
that you send one copy to STScI and place one in the Lick Reading Room. You may
also want to post an electronic version on astro-ph Web site and on your personal
Web page at Lick.
- The UCO/Lick publications specialist/webeditor will place the information on the Lick preprint Web page, including links to the electronic version of your preprint.
