Secure internet utilities on medusa
-
ssh: replaces rsh
- Provides an encrypted connection so that your password
never travels in cleartext (password sniffing being very popular
these days).
- Furthermore, it usually succeeds in automagically
securely forwarding your X connection, so you never again have to
figure out the DISPLAY environment variable.
- You should never type "xhost +..."
- Whenever you have previously typed
rsh SomeHost SomeCommand
now you should do
ssh SomeHost SomeCommand
- NOTE 1: Sometimes you'll see the message
Host key not found from the list of known hosts.
Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?
Answer "yes" and continue.
- NOTE 2: to replace
rcmd SomeHost SomeCommand
simply do
ssh -f SomeHost SomeCommand
slogin: replaces rlogin and telnet
- It has the same rules of use as ssh.
scp: replaces rcp
- And it comes with a cool progress meter.
- Use it just like rcp.
