Background on the = Pelican.=A0 The Pelican was designed by Captain William Short.=A0 His wife, Muriel, still manages = the registration of the Pelicans and selling plans.=A0 She has a website listed above.=A0 The Smith's (Fred and Don) built Pelicans for 30+ years.=A0 They recently retired from the = Pelican building and turned the business over to me.=A0 They mentored me on building the Pelican and passed on all their = tricks to the trade.=A0 I started my = business in January of 2002 and I am building the Pelicans in the same fashion.=A0

=A0

If I purchased a boat from = you=A0 I think you said the cost was = approx. $2,200 (?) unfinished.=A0 What exactly = does that include and not include?=A0 = Sails? Rigging? Motor mount? Recommended options?=A0=A0 The = basic boat ($2200.00) is a starter boat.=A0 = One would need to add sails, hardware and options.=A0 Some people like to add all stuff themselves.=A0 They don=92t want to build a kit but do not want a fully = equipped boat either, something in between.=A0 = A completely outfitted boat (that is the basic boat plus all asterisked items)=A0 plus trailer will run = you around $5900.00.=A0=A0 The basic boat = would include the finished ready to be painted boat plus spars (mast, boom and yard or = gaff, rudder, bow sprit and centerboard)=A0 = and any other options that you purchased

What about a trailer, do = you have a good source for those?=A0 What = do they typically

cost?=A0 The trailer that is popular now is the King KB1300 and it goes = for around $800.00.=A0 Can be = picked up just about anywhere.=A0 Shop around = for the best price.=A0 If you can't = find one there are several dealers in Mount Vernon and Oak Harbor.=A0 There are some modifications that need to be made to the = trailer that run about $100.00.

=A0

How do we begin the order process?=A0 What is required as = far as a

deposit/down = payment?=A0 We should discuss what you would like and then when that is all solidified we can schedule and start the build process.=A0 About $1000.00 deposit to start. =

If I live outside the 200 = mile free delivery radius, how can I get my boat?=A0 Lots of options are available.=A0 You = can pick the boat up yourself, in the past people have made a vacation out of the = trip.=A0 Anacortes and the San Juan = Islands make for a wonderful and beautiful trip.=A0=A0=A0 Sometimes I will be, or perhaps other members of the fleet will = be traveling in your directions and can pull a trailer.=A0 Occasionally for a specific area a number of boats will = be purchased and the total buyers can share in the delivery costs.=A0=A0=A0

=A0

ETA on completing the boat? = =A0It takes a couple weeks to build the boat.=A0

=A0

What is your boat building experience (You mentioned that you were "just getting started" = with the Pelican Biz )? =A0=A0I have built a couple boats and = have a number of years working around boats and doing lots of boat = maintenance.=A0 Additionally when I first moved = to Anacortes I have worked for an Anacortes custom yacht builder in their wood shop = but my real woodworking experience has been as a hobby woodworker for the past = 30+ years.=A0 The boats are pretty = straightforward and relatively simple to build.=A0 = I have worked with the Smith's through the building of their last boat and = gained 35 years of experience in terms of tricks to the trade.=A0 They told me that it took them about 10 years to perfect = their building methods in terms of how the boat goes together best, what to do = and what not to do.=A0 I documented = the entire process and I am building the Pelicans exactly the same way.=A0 In doing this I don't have to go = through 10 years of trial and error.=A0 = Many of their boats that they build in their early years are still around and well, so = their methods are time tested.=A0=A0 = You are more than welcome to come up and see the shop and my craftsmanship.=A0

=A0Do the boats come with any warranty on materials & workmanship? I will cover any defects in materials and workmanship = as it pertains to the wooden structures.=A0 Hardware like blocks and cleats etc would be covered by the manufacturer.=A0 Normally I = would replace the part and send it back to my supplier.=A0 If you had your boat ten years and you took care of it and one = day your mast which is laminated came apart, I would fix it, no charge.=A0 I will stand behind my work.=A0 If you neglect your boat I will = fix it but at your cost.=A0 The boat is = made to last a lifetime, only quality products are used.=A0 If you take care of your boat and don=92t leave it out in the = weather it will require very little maintenance.=A0 The problem some folks have is that the Pelican is a wooden boat = and you have to take care of it.=A0 = People that have problems with their boats are those folks that neglect their boat, = leave it out in the rain with the drain plugs in season after season.=A0 There is maintenance on the boat, = especially if you are island hopping/cruising.=A0 Bringing the boat up on the rocks/shells will wear away the glass = on the bottom and occasionally some bare wood will become exposed.=A0 It is real easy to fix, but this = kind of stuff needs to be addressed.=A0 = Varnish that is chipped and exposed to the elements needs to be fixed.=A0 Lots of folks do much of the work themselves.=A0 They take pride = in their Pelicans and make the effort to do the work themselves.=A0 There is always free advice.=A0 Most likely all you have to do is = mention at one of the parties that you need to do such and such and you will = probably get a handful of people that are just about willing to do it for you.=A0 Plus every June in this area = there is a fix up day.=A0 Usually in the past = it has been at the Smith's place.=A0 = Everyone comes with their boats and they can pull the Pelican up on the lawn, flip the = boat and everyone pitches in and fixes things up.=A0 Usually it is new=A0 = hardware that is the only cost.=A0 After = everyone is done there is always a BBQ, main dish is supplied and everyone brings a = side dish.
