Logistics


Format

The Adaptive Optics Workshop is designed as a series of presentations and activites to be given by both science users of and members of the Keck AO support team.

Talks

  • Talks are designed to provide practical information for planning efficient AO runs
  • For each topic, we try to pair a Keck AO support team member, and an experienced observer to give both perspectives on the most important planning considerations
  • Sessions are separated by coffee breaks and lunch (free of charge)

Activites

  • As part of the workshop, we will run two interactive activities
  • The first will involve data reduction and analysis of NIRC2 AO imaging data
  • The second will involve data reduction and analysis of OSIRIS AO Spectroscopy data
  • Participants are encouraged to bring laptops to the workshop on which to load software reduction packages
  • If you do not plan to bring a laptop, additional computers will be available for your use.

Meals and Snacks

  • Snacks and refreshments provided during the morning and afternoon coffee breaks
  • A free lunch will be provided on the second day of the workshop

Internet access

  • Guest wireless internet is accessible anywhere on campus via CruzNet (See CruzNet guest access guidelines). Note that CruzNet is not encrypted.
  • Durring the workshop, high speed internet access will be available for some the workshop activities

Directions and Transport

Directions

The meeting will be held on the UCSC campus, in the Interdisciplinary Science Building (ISB) room 102. You may find this campus maps useful for getting around UCSC. Paper maps are available (no charge) at the main entrance kiosk at the base of campus 7:00 am - 8:00 pm. Directions to the Center for Adaptive Optics, which is right next door to the ISB, are available from:

Parking

We recommend that you park in the Core West Parking Structure, which is located near the Interdisciplinary Sciences Building, the Center for Adaptive Optics, and the Earth and Marine Science Building in the area of campus known as Science Hill.

Parking Permit Required

You may purchase a temporary one-day permit at the main entrance kiosk just inside the campus main entrance between 7:00 am and 8:00 pm. These are also available at the TAPS Sales Office located in Barn H between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm. Cost is $5.50.

Faculty and staff from other UC campuses are eligible for parking reciprocity when visiting UCSC. You must present your UC parking permit or photocopy at the main entrance kiosk to receive your free parking permit.

If you already know that you will need a parking permit, please indicate this on the registration form.

Airport shuttles

Shuttle services from the airport to campus or to your lodging are available for a fee:

    Reservations required.
  • Public transport

    Some of these offer UCSC corporate rates; this option is listed on the above pages. Be sure to bring your own ethernet cable if needed in case none are available at the hotel.
