DIRECTORY FOR INCOMING FTP FILES

Anonymous ftp users see /usr/local/ftp/incoming (the incoming anonymous ftp directory) as
ftp.ucolick.org:/pub/incoming

This directory is for temporary storage of files which have been sent by remote collaborators and colleagues. Local users at Lick can simply copy files from here into their own directories.

There is a 3 day limit here; after that all files are wiped. No mercy.

It is now required that you place incoming files into directories whose name matches the username of the intended recipient at Lick. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THIS RULE WILL RESULT IN ALMOST IMMEDIATE DELETION. You can do this using anonymous ftp; most ftp clients have a MKDIR command.

Note that there is no way to provide for any security here. Any file in this directory is "rwx" by anybody anywhere in the universe. Anyone anywhere can modify files here--possibly in harmful ways. Transfer of binary programs via this directory opens you up to viruses and other worse forms of security holes. Please be suspicious of any files which were written using anonymous ftp.

(Users who are regularly exchanging files between Lick and collaborators at other sites may request a permanent directory for their own use. When requesting this directory, please indicate the maximum length of time that files in your new ftp directory need to persist.)
