markant - "infam"

markant (carsten endrass to his mam) is known alternately as the german autechre and the guy who releases way too many overpriced twelvers for like eighteen bucks a pop and the mu'fucka needs a sense of some quality mu'fuckin-control. the prospect of a full-length cd, what with his spotty track record, seemed dubious at best. what a happy surprise, then, that this is some of the strongest material endrass has released - much of it is on par with the gems in his backcatalogue that are so good and appear just frequently enough to make markant one of idm's most frustrating underachievers.

there's nothing you haven't heard here, but all the cozily familiar tracks, from badesi's pole explorations to sturmwarnung's bola by way of beefcake melodrama, are very easy on the ears. with a finely tuned ear for juxtaposing the turgid and mechanical with the warm, wet organic, infam renders impressions of slow decay, green moss and giant ferns overtaking the sweltering empty cities, the streets carpeted by thick lush loam. it's more the drowned world than mirrorshades is all i'm saying, and that's okay with me. if the rest of his output is of this high a quality, markant will be a lot more than an idm kid who coulda been a contenda.
