Sky & Telescope magazine's meteor page has several articles on the
Leonids, the best-known November shower and almost certainly the
source of the 1966 meteor storm you mentioned.
According to the first of the articles, the Leonids lie on the same
orbit as comet Tempel-Tuttle, and are probably debris released by the
comet on previous passes by the Sun.
