The chances of discovering an uncharted star, double star, or nebula are
pretty slim. However, there are numerous asteroids, comets, and
supernovae that are discovered every year by amateur astronomers. Amateur
astronomers also make large contributions to astronomy by carefully
observing known variable stars, planetary occultations of stars, and
other interesting events. See, for example, the American Amateur
Variable Star Observers (AAVSO). I don't have their website at hand, but
it is probably www.aavso.org or something similar.
