Hello,
The majority of the symbols used to identify the planets come from Greek
and Roman mythology (as do the names of the planets). The symbols for
the sun, Earth, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are all
ancient, and I have no further knowledge of what those symbols mean (or
even where to look for those meanings!). I do know that the symbol for
Neptune is the trident, which was the staff Neptune (god of the seas)
used. The least interesting symbol may be Pluto. The symbol for pluto
is just capital P and capital L placed on top of one another.
Also, the symbol for the moon is a crescent, which arises from the
crescent phases of the moon.
