General
Astronomical photos have been part of Lick Observatory's heritage since the late 1800s. UCO (University of CA Observatories) policy encourages the distribution and of images resulting from its observations and research. In addition, UCO reserves the right to grant or withhold the permission to reproduce images based upon assessment of the scientific and/or publicity value of the proposed project.
All decisions to grant or withhold permission for image use will be made exclusively by UCO/Lick Observatory.
Images must be purchased directly from UCO/Lick Observatory for reproduction, to guarantee the image quality. No images will be loaned for reproduction.
All requests for permission to reproduce UCO/Lick Observatory images must be submitted in writing to the UCO/Lick Observatory Publications Office, via post, fax, e-mail, or online form. NO telephone permissions will be given. Upon receipt of your permission fees, the Publications Office will issue a letter granting permission to reproduce specific images for a specific purpose. No blanket permissions will be granted.

Credit lines
Permission to reproduce UCO/Lick Observatory images requires standard credit lines below, unless the permission document specifically states otherwise.
• Print and electronic uses: "Photo © UC Regents/Lick Observatory."
• Web use: "Photo © UC Regents/Lick Observatory. Unauthorized use prohibited" plus a link back to the UCO/Lick Observatory website.
Charges
UCO/Lick Observatory retains the sole right to determine the category and charges appropriate to your project.

Permission may be granted without fee for one-time educational
and/or publicity reproductions.
Includes one-time educational uses such as educational displays, community slide shows, and school video productions. Also covers certain articles (print or web) and broadcasts that create publicity for UCO/Lick Observatory or its astronomers and research. - One time publication rights may be granted with a fee for commercial
reproductions. These rights must be renewed, with an additional fee, for
each new edition printed or produced, unless multiple-edition rights are
purchased. The fee is charged for each use of an image.
Examples include publication of textbooks, photo books, slide sets and CD-ROMs. Either one-time rights or multiple-edition rights may be purchased.
- black-and-white photographic images: $25 each
- color photographic images: $50 each
Multiple-edition rights may be granted with a set fee for commercial reproductions. These rights include images reproduced in the original edition plus all future editions and translations.
- black-and-white photographic images: $100 each
- color photographic images: $200 each
- Permission may be granted with a fee for website use.
The credit line for electronic images MUST be used in its entirety.
A link to the UCO/Lick Observatory must be provided.
- for science education use: $25 each
- for all other uses: $50 each
- UCO/Lick Observatory images are not available for items produced for commercial resale such as posters, T-shirts, postcards, and calendars.
