--------------------------- FAQs and answers for ASTR 1 --------------------------- Here are some answers to a sampling questions we've been receiving so far: 1. ? A: *Before* you even ask a question, check the main course document at: https://docs.google.com/document/d/15Ccstje03L1d_a-3R11lZ7HrMI5WjnKoj4ylCJRMzbI/edit?usp=sharing Most questions we've been receiving so far -- e.g., when are the discussion sections? how many per week? what you need if you didn't attend the first class? etc. -- are already answered in the document. The second resource to check for supplemental information is the Canvas site (you must already be on the Canvas site or the course document if you're reading this!). Look around first. While we're happy to answer questions, there's well over 200 of you and only a few of us, and that too with busy schedules. We've tried to compile as much relevant information as possible in the two sites above and would much rather answer questions about course material instead of course logistics, so please read before you pull the trigger on email. All that said, here are some questions and answers: ---------------- 2. Which edition of the book and homework software do I need? A: The latest edition of the textbook, bundled with the Connect online homework access code, is available at the UCSC bookstore. This bundle is less expensive than than buying the stand alone Connect access code from the McGraw-Hill website. Please speak to the TAs or instructor if this poses a financial burden. 3. Where/how can I borrow a book? Please speak to the instructor or one of the TAs. 4. Which clicker app or physical remote will we use A: We will use an online clicker system called Kudu. 5. I am number X on the wait list. Should I wait to see if I will get in? A: This is entirely your call. Conservatively, anyone with a wait list number under 5 should get in but we obviously can't guarantee anything. 6. How much math will there be in the class? A: The math is not college level - mostly single variable algebra (solve for the one unknown quantity in an equation) and some trigonometry. Comfort with powers of 10 is a good thing because we're dealing with umm, astronomical numbers here. That said, we'll practice in discussion sections. Please come to these if you feel you're rusty or uncomfortable with the above and we will help you out. 7. Discussion sections - when, where, how many? A: Check the class web page for the discussion section time and location. Attending discussion sections is entirely OPTIONAL. If you can't come to the sections, please come to the TAs' and/or my office hours or arrange to meet us by appointment. 8. Will exams, clicker quizzes, and online homework assignments be graded on a curve? A: Yes, EVERYTHING will be graded on a curve. -------------------------------------
