----------- Title: ----------- Detailed chemical abundances of Galactic globular cluster stars using Keck/DEIMOS spectra and a newly-developed analysis method ----------- Advisors: Graeme Smith & Raja GuhaThakurta Abstract of recent Keck/DEIMOS proposal (brief description of project): ----------- We propose to obtain DEIMOS spectra for 10 globular clusters in order to measure detailed abundances of Li, Mg, Al, O, Na, and Ba. Intracluster patterns in these abundances hold the key to answering questions about deep mixing, pollution from supernovae and AGB ejecta, the primordial Li abundance, and the formation of the Galactic stellar halo. ----------- For this first-year research project, the student will work closely with UCSC faculty members Graeme Smith and Raja GuhaThakurta, Caltech Hubble postdoctoral fellow Evan Kirby (former UCSC graduate student), and UT Austin faculty member Chris Sneden on this project. Funding is available for the first academic year/summer and beyond contingent on research progress. ----------- Related links: - Recent Keck/DEIMOS proposal on this topic - contains the broader scientific justification for this project as well as technical details: http://www.ucolick.org/~raja/gc_abund.pdf - A link to Evan's recent paper that discusses the technique he has developed to measure detailed chemical abundances from Keck/DEIMOS spectra of individual stars; http://xxx.lanl.gov/pdf/0909.3092 -----------
