----------- Project #1: ----------- Student: Anna Mirabella (Castilleja School) Mentor: Dave Cowley (Lick Shops) The SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) project would like to use the old Astrograph dome and polar axis to mount several of their 12 to 18 inch telescopes. To better understand how the telescopes can be mounted and for various development efforts, they would like to model these things using our standard mechanical design software (Solid Works). This will require the student (or students) to learn how to use the three-dimensional software, to learn to read engineering drawings, and to measure and draw existing things for which we do not have drawings. They would then "build up" a three-dimensional software model in the same way we do for the things that we design and build. When operational the SETI telescopes will operate robotically, every night there are clear skies, looking for laser flashes from space. The reason to have multiple telescopes is to statistically reduce the possibility of a false positive detection. ----------- Project #2: ----------- Student: Susan Tu (Harker School) Mentors: David Hilyard and Brian Dupraw (Lick Shops) The student will work with optics expert David Hilyard on polishing witness samples. The idea is to get raw samples of optical material, polish them, coat them in the Lick Shop's coating tank, abuse them is some way, then measure the reflectance/transmission, and record the result. -----------
