1st-2nd: The countryside surrounding Pucón. The lake and volcano are just visible in the background through the haze.
3rd: Close-up of Lago Villarrica and Volcán Villarrica (2847m/9300ft), with Pucón between them and Volcán Quetrupillán (2360m/7700ft) in the background.

Volcán Villarica, supposedly the most active volcano in the Andes, looms over everything in the area. In the last photo, smoke can be seen billowing off the top -- on days like this, one can't ascend all the way to the crater. The locals live with the constant concern that they'll have to be evacuated some day.

Scenes from the shores of Lago Villarrica.

The Gran Hotel Pucón, perhaps the most famous hotel in Chile. We got a great deal in the off-season.

Insect life large and small. The big critter is a ciervo volador ("flying stag" = stag beetle).

1st: Group photo for Extragalactic Star Clusters conference.
2nd-6th: Rafting the lower Río Trancura (Class II/III rapids).

Climbing Volcán Villarrica: we pushed on despite the weather. The descent via glacier-butt-tobogganing made the the unpleasant ascent just worthwhile.
