Stellar mass completeness in CANDELS/3D-HST

Completeness in stellar mass of the 3D-HST/CANDELS catalogs was estimated by comparing source detection in the wide and deep components of the CANDELS survey. 25% of the CANDELS/deep data in the GOODS-S field were reduced and combined to match the depth of the wide component (visits 1 and 2 as defined by Grogin et al. 2011). These images were combined with direct imaging data from 3D-HST to create a noise equalized detection image. Source detection in the new "shallow" image was compared to source detection in CANDELS/deep in order to determine completeness in stellar mass (for full details see Tal et al. 2014). The catalogs are estimated to be 90% complete in stellar mass down to Ms = 1.1×109M at z < 1.8 and down to Ms = 2.6×109M at z < 2.5.
