Shane AO  

Problem: VNC Display Crash

Manifestation:

• In ShaneAO Loop control GUI (saocon_gui running on shred.ucolick.org which interacts with the real time code): Clicking on a virtual button causes window VNC: 1 AO to close.
• In xterm window on real.ucolick.org running shaneao software: Entering commands causes window VNC: 1 AO to close.
• If text gets written to xterm window that is partially outside the visible area of the VNC screen, than it will cause the VNC viewer to close.

Solution/Recovery:

• Believed solved by 2017-01-07 upgrade of VNC in use (to TigerVNC version 1.7.0).

  (Indirect result of replacing shard.ucolick.org with shred.ucolick.org and upgrade to CentOS-7. RealVNC version 4.1.3 (formerly in use) is incompatible with CentOS-7, hence introduction of TigerVNC.

  However, TigerVNC version 1.3.1, included as part of CentOS-7, is bugged. Bugs circumvented by upgrade to TigerVNC version 1.7.0.

  TigerVNC version 1.7.0 no longer supports 8-bit pseudocolour desktops, hence using TigerVNC 1.7.0 and later means that only 24-bit truecolor desktops can be supported.)

• Stop and re-start:
  1. Real time shaneao code.
  2. ShaneAO Loop control GUI (saocon_gui).

Avoidance:

• Ensure xterm windows are completely visible in the VNC viewer.

Cause:

• Unknown.
