SHANEAO Problem: WFS focus, WFS Y, WFS Y / Galil 7 Amplifier Fault

Manifestation:

  • WFS focus, WFS Y, WFS Y report disabled.
  • saomot1, saomot3 services require re-start.
  • saomot7 service dies.

Solution/Recovery: Level 1

  • Lock stages:

In ShaneAO motor control GUI: Actions, Lock stages...; Unselect all.

Select WFS focus, WFS X & WFS Y.

Add entry to explanation field (e.g. "Trouble report 12779").

    Select Lock.

  • Allow locked stages to cool:

Wait a judicious amount of time (e.g. several hours).

For the interim, use workaround script on shimmy:

    /u/user/observers/lgs/scripts/objsky.tcl <Nexposures> <Xloops>

This script takes N exposures on axis with the loops closed, opens the loops, moves the telescope 30 arcseconds and takes either N or 3 (whichever is less) sky frames, then goes back on axis and closes loops, repeats X times.

  • Power-cyle, re-calibrate and re-set locked stages:

Power-cycle Galil 7 via ShaneAO Power Controls (saomot_gui) GUI, (outlet [C7]), with an unpowered phase of circa 30--60 seconds.

Following restoration of power, re-calibrate: WFS X, WFS Y, (WFS focus).

    Ensure motors are ON.

    Following re-calibration, set: WFS X = -1290, WFS Y = -7725, (WFS focus = -20).

Enable motion in ShaneAO motor control GUI (saomot_gui) and ShARCS wheel control GUI (saowheels_gui).

    In ShaneAO motor control GUI:

    • Ensure Lenslet (re-)set to 16x or 8x.
    • Ensure Orientation (re-)set to OnTelescope.
  • Services saomot1, saomot3 and saomot7 may require re-start.

Solution/Recovery: Level 2 (if level 1 attempt unsuccessful).

  • Master re-set of Galil 7 may be required.
  • Consider operating for the remainder of science nights, with motors locked in their on-axis positions. Thus regular dithering scripts will not work.

    Use work-around script on shimmy:

    /u/user/observers/lgs/scripts/objsky.tcl <Nexposures> <Xloops>

This script takes Nexposures on axis with the loops closed, opens the loops, moves the telescope 30 arcseconds and takes either N or 3 (whichever is less) sky frames, then goes back on axis and closes loops, repeats Xloops times.

Cause:

  • Motor temperatures excessive?
  • Disruption to network connection between Galil 7 and dispatchers, disabling motors because of lack of heartbeat signal?
