Procedure: Hennawi Program

  1. Preparatory to all science targets, derive new static mirror shape:

    • Ensure Loops open.
    • Ensure TUB = 74.0.
    • Execute ~/local/u/user/observers/lgs/scripts/on-axis.
    • In fieldsteer.tcl GUI:
      • Ensure LGS selected.
      • Disable Move Telescope and Auto Close Loops.
      • Select Back On-axis.
      • Enable Move Telescope and Auto Close Loops.
    • In ShaneAO loop control GUI:

      Ensure Operation mode is NGS.

    • Go to bright star nearby science target (e.g. _starDF).
    • Tune WFScam and TTCam rates appropriate to star.
    • Set Tweeter+woofer gain=0.1.
    • Close loops in NGS operation mode for a few cycles.
    • Actions... Shape... Save as flat.
    • Open loops.
    • Restore optimal Tweeter+woofer gain.
  2. If a convenient nearby AO guide star is available (e.g. _starAO), then acquire star in Tip-Tilt mode only and field steer to science target:

    • Ensure Loops open.
    • Ensure TUB = 74.0.
    • Execute ~/local/u/user/observers/lgs/scripts/on-axis.
    • In fieldsteer.tcl GUI:
      • Ensure LGS selected.
      • Disable Move Telescope and Auto Close Loops.
      • Select Back On-axis.
      • Enable Move Telescope and Auto Close Loops.
    • In ShaneAO loop control GUI:
      • Ensure Operation mode is TT only.
    • Go to convenient star nearby science target (e.g. _starAO).
    • Tune WFScam and TTCam rates appropriate to star.
    • Close loops in TT only operation mode.
    • In fieldsteer.tcl GUI:
      • Ensure LGS selected.
      • Enable Move Telescope and Auto Close Loops.
      • Field steer to science target.
    • Set exposure parameters.
    • Via scriptproc.tcl GUI:
      • run Bxy script with 5 arcsec dithers (doing 4- or 5-point dither where desired).
  3. If a guide star is NOT available, then acquire field directly in NGS mode. Telescope operator must find off-axis guide star and start guiding:

    • Ensure Loops open.
    • Ensure TUB = 74.0.
    • Execute ~/local/u/user/observers/lgs/scripts/on-axis.
    • In fieldsteer.tcl GUI:
      • Ensure LGS selected.
      • Disable Move Telescope and Auto Close Loops.
      • Select Back On-axis.
      • Enable Move Telescope and Auto Close Loops.
    • In ShaneAO loop control GUI:
      • Ensure Operation mode is NGS.
    • Telescope operator acquires field directly and confirms field with diagonal mirror in position 2, then selects an off-axis guide star with diagonal mirror in position 3.
    • Execute dither script(s):

      user@shimmy: /net/shred/local/u/user/observers/lgs/scripts...

      guider-dither.tcl <nexpose> (5 point dither pattern).

      guider-dither4.tcl <nexpose> (4 point dither pattern).

  • To load known good mirror shape:

    ~/observers/lgs/saocon_setups/flat.sh

    or, load in the most recent shape or this known good shape(s) (e.g. /data/archive/tweeter_flat.fits.201710301115 and woofer_flat.fits.201710301115).

    ~/observers/lgs/saocon_setups/flat.sh cur
