Section 
discussed what was known about N(z) as of 1993. Two recent surveys have greatly contributed to the understanding of the evolution of the galaxy luminosity function with redshift: The CFRS and Autofib Surveys. Both deserve special attention as they provide an important framework for the interpretation of results from an internal kinematics survey.
