The Friends of Lick Observatory (FoLO) supports Lick through fund-raising and community outreach. FoLO also offers members many opportunities to participate in the Lick community and enjoy special connections with the telescopes, scientists, and science programs.
The Board of Directors for FoLO is the Lick Observatory Council. The Council is composed of scientists, business entrepreneurs, and long-time observatory supporters and is dedicated to ensuring a long-term healthy future for Lick.
FoLO donations are helping Lick to do things like:
We are seeking larger gifts to enable projects like:
Since its founding, Lick Observatory has enjoyed the good will of individuals who are inspired by the prospect of observing the cosmos. From Mr. Lick himself, through the wealthy philanthropists who funded the Lick eclipse expeditions that verified Einstein's theory of general relativity, to the current Lick Volunteers who introduce Mt. Hamilton annually to the public, these friends have been an indispensable part of Lick's continuing success.
Lick's future is now being challenged by the impending withdrawal in 2018 of funding from the University of California, ending a 126-year partnership (go to Save Lick Observatory to learn more). Now more than ever Lick's future depends on the excellence of its science and its dedicated community of friends, like you!
