On December 6, 1882, Venus made a rare transit across the face of the Sun. Astronomers on Mt. Hamilton observed and recorded the event, as bricks were being laid to build Lick Observatory.
On June 5, 2012, during the last transit of Venus in our lifetimes, Lick Observatory launched its Friends of Lick Observatory program, to foster public participation in the Observatory community. Throughout the Bay Area and beyond, all who feel a special connection to the domes on Mt. Hamilton are welcome to join.
Ever since its founding, Lick Observatory has enjoyed the good will of individuals inspired by the stars and the science of observation and discovery. From the wealthy philanthropists who funded Lick Observatory's eclipse expeditions starting in the late 19th century, to current volunteers who introduce Mt. Hamilton to the public, these friends have been an indispensable part of Lick's continuing success. Now you can join them in supporting our Observatory!
Lick Observatory has always grown with the times, often leading the way with new observing techniques and areas of investigation. Now, more than ever, Lick's future depends upon both the excellence of its science and its community of friends.
